Leaving on a Jet Plane..

Daily writing prompt
What are your future travel plans?

My future travel plans happen in a few weeks to flying in near NYC from Texas for vacation.

My reason for this trip is to “window shop” for a future home not on the Long Island Sound but reasonable distance from it. My first visit to the area, I found a semi private beach that isn’t on the maps. Like my favorite beach on Lake Michigan in Michigan, it’s small and not crowded being out of the way. The areas I have chosen are reasonably priced with prices and taxes similar to west Michigan.

The most stressful part of the trip is boarding my cats who I’ll be separated from for the longest time since they came into my life. I plan to call and tell them that I love them and miss them to ease their pain.

My previous trips, I flew into BDL, Bradley Locks, a small great airport on the border of CT and NY west of Hartford which allowed me to experience most of Hwy 15 that runs throughout the center of the State.

In the past. I used to be afraid to fly but planning my own trip has helped me work through my fear. Now, I look forward to it.

Conflict Resolution

In the modern world of technology of using computers for our daily tasks at work and for our personal use of friends on Facebook and Twitter, conflict resolution is imperative to keep our neighborhoods, communities and workplaces safe.

Conflict resolution is the process of resolving disputes between two people or groups peacefully. From a simple Google search, I found many ways to resolve conflict from between two people to involve large groups of people.

Daily writing prompt
What would you change about modern society?

Harvard Business School came up with a short five step process to resolve conflicts in the workplace that would work socially as well. 1) Avoiding 2) Competing 3) Accommodating 4) Compromising and 5) Collaborating. Without going into detail on each one, it boils down to making an effort to get along despite our differences.

Growing up in Detroit during the riots, the metro area became a hot bed of discussion of learning how to live together peacefully despite our differences and to right the wrongs that were imbedded in the system. Getting people to talk who were tired of talking because nothing ever changed felt that something big had to happen so that the people would listen. Changes were made and discussions occurred to end the riots.

In the modern world, the values and practices of treating people with respect even with differences of opinion either in person or on the internet is imperative to resolving differences of opinion. Teaching this in schools as young as kindergarten to teaching this to adults would have a profound impact on everyone.

Thank you for your time.

Work Mode

Daily writing prompt
What do you listen to while you work?

At work with an open environment with little separation between employees, I listen to is a coworker who never stops talking for almost eight hours a day everyday. She primarily talks about her ex husband who has accepted that she doesn’t go away then her daughter and her granddaughter plus she also gossips about coworkers at work sometimes right in front of the person. The latter has been my experience with her. This person flatters our supervisor constantly so she won’t get fired.

For myself, I have chosen to only speak professionally when necessary plus focus on my tasks that keep me busy for most of the day to protect myself and my job. I don’t participate in social conversations at work and don’t participate in social activities for my own sanity.

Instead of music filtered in, I have her. Because I am older and I need to work, I have accepted the situation with plenty of patience and Ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Thank you,

Pasta Me Italian

Daily writing prompt
What’s your go-to comfort food?

My favorite “comfort” food is pasta primarily Italian cuisine is the best. After a long day of work, pasta never disappoints.

Up north, I used to make turkey spaghetti with whole grain noodles, ground turkey and fresh tomato sauce but the noodles didn’t soak up the sauce like true Italian noodles do. Although, healthier, it missed the mark. Few Italian restaurants outside of the national chains which none come to memory in west Michigan.

Lasagna. My favorite to order at Italian restaurants with a glass of house red wine. The best ever Italian meal for me was at Via Sporza in Westport CT. The food, the atmosphere and the people who work there made it memorable. Sally’s Apizza in New Haven CT has the best pizza and cannoli pie. Both life changing experiences and blessed to have the privilege to have dined at both places.

Texas in the land of BBQ and Mexican cuisines, there are few Italian restaurants outside of the few national chains and fewer locally owned ones. Italliani’s in Hurst probably the best place I have found.

Comfort food is pasta. The best is Italian cuisine.

Thanks again,

Answered Prayers

For the past few days, I have been praying and asking GOD to no longer be financially struggling which although I’m paying my obligations on time, I feel broke.

Yesterday, I learned from my supervisor about an energy alternative to my electric company which it sources energy through many sources and is paid by subscription. $10 per month from almost $90. After learning about company, I signed up and the funds saved will pay down my Amazon and my credit union VISA. Plus, keeping temperature between around 80 degrees to save money.

With my current home sinking in value per Zillow estimates like many others, I have learned that my property tax will decrease per my State’s legislature. This change will result in a credit or refund thus effecting my escrow account on my mortgage. My former home up north hasn’t lost value and is worth more than my current residence.

Purchased a trip for my vacation back in February and my vacuum dying adds to the financial strain. Since my trip planned, I rarely go out for dinner and I haven’t purchased clothes until recently plus cut down on gas and electric at the house.

Lastly, I keep a budget based on expenses and income from my primary job and my online closet sales. My online closet sales have improved because of my sharing of 100s of items each morning. Thought about a second job but my instincts were to sell my inventory to make sales.

Shared my personal experience because I believe that others are in the same situation as myself. Please don’t criticize, mock or politicize. Much appreciated. Hard working Americans being resilient. Myself and others will overcome our difficulties and challenges to achieve our goals.

Hopeful,

Leslie Elizabeth David.

Additional: my electric savings was misleading because of my area isn’t in the zone.

Euchre. Make the Trump.

Below are the instructions on how to play Euchre sourced from BicycleCards.com. The game is big in the Midwest especially in Michigan where I used to play in post divorce and many church related single events.

Euchre (and its variations) is the reason why modern card decks were first packaged with jokers, a card originally designed to act as the right and left “bowers” (high trumps). Although later eclipsed by Bridge (as with so many other games of this type), Euchre is still well known in America and is an excellent social game.

The game is best for four participants, playing two against two as partners. Therefore, the rules for the four-hand version are given first.

The Pack

Special Euchre decks are available, or the standard 52-card pack can be stripped to make a deck of 32 cards (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7 of each suit), 28 cards (7s omitted), or 24 cards (7s and 8s omitted). In some games, a joker is added.

Object of the Game

The goal is to win at least three tricks. If the side that fixed the trump fails to get three tricks, it is said to be “euchred.” Winning all five tricks is called a “march.”

Rank of Cards

The highest trump is the jack of the trump suit, called the “right bower.” The second-highest trump is the jack of the other suit of the same color called the “left bower.” (Example: If diamonds are trumps, the right bower is J♦ and left bower is J♥.) The remaining trumps, and also the plain suits, rank as follows: A (high), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7. If a joker has been added to the pack, it acts as the highest trump.

Card Values/scoring

The following shows all scoring situations:

Partnership making trump wins 3 or 4 tricks – 1 point Partnership making trump wins 5 tricks – 2 points Lone hand wins 3 or 4 tricks – 1 point Lone hand wins 5 tricks – 4 points Partnership or lone hand is euchred, opponents score 2 points

The first player or partnership to score 5, 7 or 10 points, as agreed beforehand, wins the game. In the 5-point game, a side is said to be “at the bridge” when it has scored 4 and the opponents have scored 2 or less.

Keeping Score with Low Card Markers

An elegant and widespread method of keeping score is with cards lower than those used in play. When game is 5 points, each side uses a three-spot and a four-spot as markers. To indicate a score of 1, the four is placed face down on the three, with one pip left exposed. For a score of 2, the three is placed face down on the four, with two pips left exposed. For a score of 3, the three is placed face up on the four. For a score of 4, the four is placed face up on the three.

Rubbers

Many Euchre games are scored by rubber points, as in Whist. The first side to win two games wins the rubber. Each game counts for the side winning; 3 rubber points if the losers’ score in that game was 0 or fewer, 2 rubber points if the losers’ score was 1 or 2, and 1 rubber point if the losers scored 3 or more. The winners’ margin in the rubber is 2 points bonus, plus the winners’ rubber points, minus the losers’ rubber points.

The Draw

From the shuffled pack spread face down, the players draw cards for partners and first deal. The two players with the two lowest cards play against the two players with the two highest cards. The player with the lowest card deals first. For drawing, the cards rank: K (high), Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, A. Players drawing equal cards must draw again. Partners sit opposite each other.

The Shuffle and Cut

The dealer has the right to shuffle last. The pack is cut by the player to the dealer’s right. The cut must not leave less than four cards in each packet.

The Deal

The cards are dealt clockwise, to the left, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer. Each player receives five cards. The dealer may give a round of three at a time, then a round of two at a time, or may give two, then three; but the dealer must adhere to whichever distribution plan he begins with. After the first deal, the deal passes to the player on the dealer’s left.

On completing the deal, the dealer places the rest of the pack in the center of the table and turns the top card face up. Should the card turned up be accepted as trump by any player, the dealer has the right to exchange the turned up card for another card in their hand. In practice, the dealer does not take the turned up card into their hand, but leaves it on the pack until it is played; the dealer signifies this exchange by placing their discard face down underneath the pack.

Making the Trump

Beginning with the player to the left of the dealer, each player passes or accepts the turn-up as trump. An opponent of the dealer accepts by saying “I order it up.” The partner of the dealer accepts by saying, “I assist.” The dealer accepts by making their discard, called “taking it up.”

The dealer signifies refusal of the turn-up by removing the card from the top and placing it (face up) partially underneath the pack; this is called “turning it down.”

If all four players pass in the first round, each player in turn, starting with the player to the dealer’s left, has the option of passing again or of naming the trump suit. The rejected suit may not be named. Declaring the other suit of the same color as the reject is called “making it next”; declaring a suit of opposite color is called “crossing it.”

If all four players pass in the second round, the cards are gathered and shuffled, and the next dealer deals. Once the trump is fixed, either by acceptance of the turn-up or by the naming of another suit, the turn-up is rejected, the bidding ends and play begins.

Playing Alone

If the player who fixes the trump suit believes it will be to their side’s advantage to play without the help of their partner’s cards, the player exercises this option by declaring “alone” distinctly at the time of making the trump. This player’s partner then turns their cards face down and does not participate in the play.

The Play

The opening lead is made by the player to the dealer’s left, or if this player’s partner is playing alone, it is made by the player across from the dealer. If possible, each player must follow suit to a lead. If unable to follow suit, the player may trump or discard any card. A trick is won by the highest card of the suit led, or, if it contains trumps, by the highest trump. The winner of a trick leads next.

Thank you for reading about the game that changed my life. With time, I learned how to win a lot. The perk of being a free spirit is that many underestimate me even in cards which opened up an avenue to shine as my true self.

Yours Truly,

Leslie Elizabeth David.

Food Moods

Daily writing prompt
What foods would you like to make?

Normally since I live alone and I haven’t had a dinner party in a long time, I make primarily foods that fit my mood and hopefully not too many calories or carbs.

Growing up in an Hungarian family in metro Detroit, I grew up eating Chicken Paprikas and Goulash plus Lafayette Coney Island in Greektown, downtown Detroit. From that, resulted in high cholesterol and other issues so I unwillingly became a vegetarian because of my family choice of better health.

The foods that I like to make are making my favorites like spaghetti with a healthy twist of ground turkey, whole grain noodles and fresh sauce. Also, I love making apple pie from scratch with homegrown apples from Michigan.

The best food that I loved to make was roasting a turkey over Thanksgiving for the then guests of the local Ronald McDonald House. Thankful that it turned out well since I roasted it in a bag and was enjoyed by the guests who thanked me later.

Making foods that I like come from memories of my childhood, experiences eating foods from across the country and dining at locally owned restaurants. In addition, my moods and cravings are a huge factor in deciding what to eat.

Have a delicious day!!

Feline Magnificent

Daily writing prompt
Dogs or cats?

Princesses Bella and Luna. Above are my two rescues who I got when they were nine months old although I was told originally they were kittens. They were underfed, underweight and full of fleas plus emotional issues that made our first few months difficult to handle at first.
As you can see, my babies are doing well. Getting ready for my first trip since I adopted them which I am feeling tense about leaving them for five days.

Truthfully, I do love dogs as well. Had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever when I was married named Cody for my then husband. I was Cody’s primary caregiver who passed shortly after me and my ex split.

Before Bella and Luna, there were Madrid and Seville after Adrian. These felines are always in my heart although they have all passed away.

Living by the Clock

Daily writing prompt
Which activities make you lose track of time?

Living by the clock is that I have a lot going on with working full time, blogging and an online closet plus maintaining a home and loving my fur babies, I don’t have time to lose track of it.

Granted, I do spend time chatting with lifetime friends on Facebook who many of them who’ve I known since kindergarten and I do spend time on live shows on Poshmark because some other closet owners are friends and/or mentors which sometimes I lose track of time that causes other schedules activities to be sidelined. Since then, I have spent less time visiting friends on live shows.

Next month when I go on vacation, I have loose plans to window shop for condominiums but I still plan to be here and to check in on friends online closets. My lack of tracking time will be time spent at the beach listening to the waves and to the seagulls that will feel like therapy.

When I lived in Michigan and no plans, I would get on my touring bike and ride the paved trails from my house. It was a workout plus a sense of freedom. Back then, I didn’t even have a mobile phone with me to put in my attached travel bag. Lost track of time because I had time to be used for rejuvenate my soul.

May your lost of tracked time be filled with love and happiness that brings peace to your soul.

Yours Truly,

Leslie Elizabeth David.

Please Don’t Bother Me…Thanks.

Daily writing prompt
What bothers you and why?

Because I am different than most people being born prematurely, I am considered to be a “free spirit.” For most of my life, I have been threatened, harassed, played, treated like I’m dumb, and the list goes on because I’m smaller than the “average” American plus I’m not part of the “crowd” or general population physically and mentally so I do and I see things differently.

With that being said, those experiences have made me stronger mentally and wiser than those who have chosen to pick on me since I’m different. For example, HR and Finance decided to “let me believe” that Finance had a crush on me and wanted a relationship so I would cave and HR would fire me for inappropriate relationship. What they didn’t know was that the Finance guy looks like my ex husband, dresses in checkered flannel shirts like my ex husband and even drives the same brand and model of vehicle like my ex husband did. With that being said, wisdom told me not to do or say anything that could incriminate myself so I just watched and observed the whole thing play out. Never said anything either. The thing I started eating lunch in my car instead of a common room to get away from it which made it more difficult for them to play their game. After a couple of months, it got old quickly which they stopped.

Unfortunately, I have two younger brothers who treat me the same way like above as my parents sometimes did so I moved away for other reasons but I see it a lot. Fortunately, I have received apologies from former classmates of mine who I have known since kindergarten and have become friends since through the magic of Facebook where we reconnected.

So, please don’t bother me or others who are different than you. We all have our gifts and skills to contribute to the world.

Thank you for your time,

Leslie Elizabeth David.

PS- “Stronger” sung by Kelly Clarkson has lyrics that are relatable to the above.
