The Absence of the Wild

Daily writing prompt
Do you ever see wild animals?

Currently living in the metroplex in north Texas where Dallas is on one side of the airport and Fort Worth is on the other with suburbia in between. With that being stated, overdevelopment of new construction has forced out animals who was called my area home.

Oddly enough, in my small town, it has a huge land preserve that people who visit to go bird watching. Driven through it a couple of times but never saw a bird or anything else.

To remedy the situation, my goal is to move back to northern Michigan as mentioned in an earlier post. I remember driving home at night or early in the morning when I had to watch out for deer and possibly another creature chasing it. Wildlife is not just on the land but in the air in northern Michigan of eagles and hawks that survive due to low population of people who are in the area for three seasons of the year. Plus, the lakes, rivers and streams have plenty of fish. Wildlife tourism is important in the area to reduce population of some species so that it would survive in the long winter months.

So, if you find yourself driving north on I-75, US-131, or US-31 or M-66, please be alert to wildlife that do cross these major roadways without stopping to check for traffic. Truthfully, I hit a 12 point buck who had a full rack and over four feet tall plus his mate was there watching. I cried not because of the damage to my car but for taking on innocent life. Behind me, a truck driver who was behind me stopped and broke down the creature in the cold air that was later consumed.

For the time being, I’ll be grateful to not have to worry about seeing creatures along the road. Be safe and be alert.

Yours Truly,
