The 1976 US Men’s Downhill Ski Team

Daily writing prompt
Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met?

Many years ago after moving from the Detroit suburbs to northern Michigan, I joined the high school ski team but never competed back in 1976.

That same year, Cary Adgate from Boyne City Michigan actually made the US Ski Team for the Winter Games. He was placed not in the position to medal but made the reserves based on his pre-race time trials. He was on the first winter Olympian from Michigan to make it to the winter games for skiing although many others from the State made it for hockey. He later became a professional downhill skier and toured the world.

Before the games, he practiced and mentored some of the junior and senior class skiers for our school. It turns out that my coach was his personal trainer as well as his old high school coach before leaving for Colorado for final time trials.

In closing, I truthfully didn’t remember the days of downhill racing in high school because the following years, I became a cheerleader. Grateful and thankful for the memories of practicing with a world class athlete.

Thank you,

Leslie Elizabeth David.
