Previously, a friend allowed me to share her work experience in general way. She has given me permission to share her story without using names that would give her and other’s identities away.
My friend was attempted to be duped by senior management of the company in the past because they decided that she was “less than” them. What saved her was her being quiet and observant. One of the senior management, it was a man who pretended to be interested in her. She stated that his acting was truly fake and she questioned why a top employee would be interested in the lowest status one. Before he would come in and do his act, she stated that he would go talk to HR first because she was behind it. She believed that if she fell for his “fake” actions that she would be fired instead of him because the story would be twisted around to sound like she was the pursuer. As time went on, she ignored the behavior of this senior employee. For one reason, she keeps to herself and doesn’t share much about her personal life plus she rarely engages in conversations that aren’t work related. What they didn’t know and would never find out is that the senior employee who pretended to be pursuing her reminded her of her ex husband. Details like he drives the same vehicle which her ex drove but with a lift kit to raise it and with bigger tires. Plus, he wears flannel every day like her ex husband does plus he looked like her ex and acted like him. It carried on for a few months which she couldn’t approach anyone about it because they either knew or were involved. When the senior employees plan didn’t work after about four months of their behavior, HR announced to the General Manager who was unaware of their scheme that she couldn’t put her scanned documents in certain crates any longer. She told me that the GM was furious while she focused on him and not HR. The procedure never changed. She believed that the owners were aware of the situation because her time off requests were approved immediately and quickly constantly likely trying to avoid litigation from my friend.
Some say that “reality is better than fiction,” which this proves it. Wisdom told her to be quiet and observe. Previously mentioned, there are no written documents on professional standards within the office so personal relationships must be approved by management and owners to carry on although some have happened or still are with one of the employees being married to someone outside of the organization. Unfortunate and true. My friend needs the job despite the problems.
In closing, these types of situations happen all the time even in this decade despite technology and professional ethics standards in many industries. This story plays out in many professional and other organizations with different means and ways of destroying another individual with those in charge looking another direction until the victim decides to retain an attorney, Don’t tolerate it!
Yours Truly,
Leslie Elizabeth David.
