Gerontology/Geriatrics

Gerontology defined by the College of Public Health “is the study of aging and older adults which has evolved as longevity has evolved.” In America, it begins at the age of traditional retirement of 65. Geriatric medicine is the focus on health and care for older adults. At the age of 75 of when older adults may face more challenges and require specialized medical attention.

My Dad was an Osteopathic physician who practiced family/general medicine in a clinic as he began his medical career then he moved into emergency medicine before ending up in the ever evolving sports medicine. His cues to staying healthy and mentally sharp are stay active physically, eat healthy and keep your mind sharp by reading. He was a vegetarian for his older years although his children aren’t including me. He would say that doing movement like the downward dog in yoga or just bending over to bring blood flow to the brain on a regular basis will help one to keep one mentally sharp. Check with your physician before making any changes to your diet and physical activity. My Dad did his pre-med at Wayne State University and earned is doctorate at the University of Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before medicine, he was at Michigan State University for engineering intended to work for Ford Motor in production.

My encouragement to you is to have an inquisitive mind on your aging so the knowledge that you have can make a positive impact on your life and those you love. PBS has information and television programs regarding older populations as well as AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) plus seeking out reliable information at your local library and the internet.

Thank you,
